Kerala CM Oommen Chandy said that they had already convinced the Central leadership on the gravity of the issue.

New Delhi: MPs from Kerala on Wednesday protested outside Parliament demanding that the Centre steps in to resolve the crisis over the Mullaperiyar Dam. Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, speaking on the issue, said that they had already convinced the Central leadership about the gravity of the situation.

"They all wonder why Tamil Nadu is opposing this (building a new dam)," he said. Chandy further said, "In all the water disputes in India in the past, the dispute is regarding the sharing of water. Here, the case is different. We have full confidence in Supreme Court, but now, we are not in a position to wait."

Meanwhile, in Kerala, protesters continued to block the national highway at Kumily bordering Tamil Nadu. The Kerala Cabinet also met on Wednesday to consider calling a special assembly session over the issue.

Congress MPs from Kerala also met the National Human Rights Commission officials. According to reports, the commission will give them a full hearing on Monday.
