Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party legislature meeting on Saturday is likely to bring in a change of guard for Uttar Pradesh and a new leader for the party. Akhilesh Yadav is most likely to be named as the new Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and the announcement is expected at the SP legislature party meeting at around 11 am.
The 'Pehelwaan' from Etawah, who wrestled his way up in Uttar Pradesh politics to become the state chief minister thrice is likely to give way to the new.
Sources have told CNN-IBN the generation next is all set to take on the mantle though Akhilesh has been pitching in for his father all along. If confirmed, Akhilesh Yadav will be the youngest Chief Minister of UP at the age of 38.
It's a decision, which has not gone down well with some senior leaders and old guards. Leaders like Azam Khan and even Mulayam's brother Shivpal Singh are not very comfortable with the idea.
However, what goes in Akhilesh's favour is the nature of the mandate, thumping and comprehensive to avert any rumblings within.
Akhilesh's attempt for a complete image makeover has paid rich dividends, ending years of aversion within the upper castes and the youth under his leadership. The new Samajwadi Party has tried to break away from the past by rejecting the likes of DP Yadav.
Akhilesh's aides are tech savvy, IIM professors, helping him win votes even in urban constituencies like Lucknow.
"Akhilesh fought the battle for the youth, the underprivileged. Akhilesh genuinely wants UP to prosper. He is a good man and a good leader," Akhilesh’s supporter said.
On the flip side, Akhilesh lacks administrative experience but then Mulayam realises all too well that there cannot be a more optimum time than this. With a clear mandate, Akhilesh will get enough time to find his feet and get the act together. The tide is with Mulayam and he for one knows better than anyone the importance of timing in political decision making.
