Chidambaram rebuts Modi on rupee, says it fell even during NDA regime
While taking a dig at Modi, Chidambaram said that we should add another topic under the "history lessons from Narendra Modi".

New Delhi: Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday rebutted Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on the fate of rupee saying it fell even during the NDA regime. He said that the exchange rate of rupee was 39.49 against dollar in March 1998 when the NDA came to power and it declined to 45 on March 25, 2004 when they demitted office.

"The exchange of rupee was Rs 39.49 to the dollar in march 1998 when the NDA first formed government. It declined to 42.84 in May, 1999 when the NDA again formed government after elections. It further declined to 45.0 on March 25, 2004 when the NDA demitted office," said Chidambaram.

While taking a dig at Modi, who has been facing flak for making goof ups with facts and figures, Chidambaram said that we should add another topic under the "history lessons from Narendra Modi".

Modi, who has taken a head start over his political opponents with his aggressive campaigning, has made several goof ups while speaking in Indian history and historical figures during his election rallies. The latest embarrassment was when Modi referred to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi as Mohanlal Gadhi in an election rally. He also confused BJP's founding leader Shyama Prasad Mookherjee with freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Varma in a keynote speech delivered in Kheda on November 10.
