New Delhi: Ahead of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2017, former Congress state president and MLA Rita Bahuguna Joshi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of party president Amit Shah and other senior leaders of the party.
Joshi reached the BJP office at Ashoka Road on Thursday afternoon and addressed a press conference.
Attacking Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, Joshi said that when Congress president Sonia Gandhi was at the helm she would at least pay heed to her words.
"I have served the Congress for 24 years but i feel it has lost reputation. I have also resigned as an MLA from Uttar Pradesh. Rahul Gandhi's leadership is not acceptable to people. With Rahul at the helm, nobody listens to us. He has anyways outsourced the entire party to PK overnight," Joshi said hinting at party strategist Prashant Kishore.
"Joshi added that the poison of casteim has been sown in the state of Uttar Pradesh and it is time to eradicate these issues and uplift the state," she added.
"Betrayal has been a history of Rita Bahuguna and her family. Even her brother left the Congress and went to BJP," Babbar said.
Babbar also hit out at the BJP and said that it has largely been successful in forming a party of traitors since the time it has come to power.
Sources close to her said Joshi is upset with the party for having projected an "outsider" in Sheila Dikshit as CM candidate.
Joshi had led the party in the last assembly polls in the state in which Congress came a poor fourth.
State BJP leaders when contacted said a final call on this has to be taken by the party's central leadership.
A top source in the Congress said, "We have no indication of her joining the BJP, but we will speak to her. She is a senior leader."
Elections to the state assembly are to be held early next year, and Congress has this time around projected former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, another Brahmin leader, as CM candidate.
