Bangalore: The Congress on Thursday won the Chamundeshwari Assembly seat in Karnataka, narrowly defeating a joint candidate of the ruling Janata Dal (Secular) and Bharatiya Janata Party.
The winner, Siddaramaiah who joined the Congress after being disillusioned with Janata Dal (Secular), won by 257 votes, making it his fifth victory from the constituency.
He was being given stiff competition by the JD(S) and Karnataka Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy and his father H D Deve Gowda had reportedly pumped in a lot of resources to defeat Siddaramaiah.
He has now claimed that he will bring the ruling JD(S) government down.
Expressing jubilation over Siddaramaiah’s victory, Opposition Congress leader in the Karnataka assembly N Dharam Singh said was also a vote against the ruling JD(S)-BJP coalition government.
"It is certainly a loss of face for JD(S) chief H D Deve Gowda, his son Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa," he said.
