New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi sounded the poll bugle in Karnataka on Sunday, saying the Congress government’s days in the state were numbered.

Your enthusiasm here shows the countdown of the Congress government in Karnataka has started, Modi told the people gathered to hear him at a rally in Bengaluru.

The rally marked the end of the BJP’s 90-day Nava Nirman Parivarthan Yatra in Karnataka.

“The political winds are changing and Congress is standing at the exit gate in Karnataka. This country does not need the Congress culture,” Modi said.

Tearing into the Siddaramaiah government, Modi said, “The Congress CM has only done business here. People are seeing how the Congress has run the government this last four years. They have ruled for only self-interest.”

"When the Congress was there in the centre, Karnataka was given Rs 73,000 crore. When the BJP came to power in the centre, we gave the state 2 lakh crore. It is an increase of 180 percent. However, have you seen that money given to the state?" he said.

“I have been told that Karnataka government is being recognised as 10% government as no work is possible without 10% commission,” he added.

Indirectly referencing the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh, he said, “In the whole world, people talk about ease of doing business. But in Karnataka, the government only discuss about ease of doing murder. This is a danger to democracy. Karnataka is going to be Congress mukt.”

Modi also used the U-19 Indian Cricket Team winning the World Cup to attack the Congress. “Our U19 Cricket Team won World Cup yesterday. Their head coach Rahul Dravid was a significant factor behind this victory and this can't be denied. He teaches us to work honestly and live for others. This is the culture of Karnataka but the present state government is ruining this culture,” he said.

Making the case for the BJP as a farmer-friendly party, Modi also put his weight behind BS Yeddyurappa who is the chief ministerial candidate of the party.

“In this budget, my government has made a significant decision so that correct price of crops are given to farmers. If Yeddyurappa, son of a farmer, becomes CM of Karnataka, the projects for farmers will work at its best because Yeddurappa has the best interest of farmers at heart,” he said.

“Irrigation schemes are helping farmers. We work to reform, perform and transform. We will solve every small problem you face… The farmers who grow vegetables and fruits like tomatoes, onions and potatoes that are also top priority for us. Tomato, Onion and Potato (TOP). They are TOP priority,” he added.

Showcasing the party as one which understands the needs of the common folk, Modi said that his dream was to see a person wearing hawai chappal flying in a plane.

Using the record of the central government, Modi pitched the BJP as the best bet for the development of Karnataka. “We understand middle class aspirations. We know that youth from middle class does not want to be a job seeker. He wanted to become a job creator. For this purpose, 3 lakh crore is the budget allocation for the Mudra Yojna,” he said.

“The recent budget has solved one problem of Karnataka, with an investment of Rs 17,000 crores. This includes construction work of 160 km long sub-urban railway network will be started in Bengaluru. This will provide relief for 15 lakhs commuters of the city,” he added.

“Only in Karnataka, 44 major projects work is going on of which most are railways or roads, so many infrastructure related projects. It shows Centre has given priority to the next generation infrastructure for people of Karnataka,” Modi said.

Earlier, Modi began his speech with a few lines in Kannada. The state goes to polls later this year.
