Thanjavur: The Election Commission had fully implemented the State's laws and regulations during the assembly elections held on April 13, and the election was carried out in a fair manner, said Chief Election Officer Praveen Kumar on Wednesday.
Praveen Kumar was here to review security at the vote-counting centre in Kundavai Nachiyar Women's College, where the EVMs of the Thanjavur, Thiruvaiyaru and Orathanadu constituencies are safeguarded with four-tier security.
When some reporters pointed out the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's recent criticism that the Election Commission was like a horse without a bridle, he said laws may vary from state to state, but during the recent elections, the State’s law was strictly implemented to ensure a smooth conduct of elections.
Asked about legal action against those who violated election rules, Praveen Kumar said nearly 70 per cent of chargesheets were already filed against them, and the rest would be done before May 12.
On counting of votes, Praveen said booth-wise counting of votes would be carried out, and for every round the total number of votes would be checked by Election Observers who would approve them to publish on the ECs website.
He said that a minimum of 8 tables and a maximum of 14 would be arranged in counting booths for district officials and Central Micro-Observers who would watch the counting procedure.
He said election observers alone would be permitted to use cell phones inside the counting centres. Media persons would be allowed to use cell phones only at the Media centres.
