UPA chief feels Congress party must keep the focus national for elections.

New Delhi: Asking the partymen to focus on national issues in the coming Lok Sabha elections, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said the party was the only "truly" national party with a vibrant presence across the country.

Addressing the last meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party of the 14th Lok Sabha, Gandhi said, "Ours is the only truly national party with a vibrant presence throughout the country".

Emphasising that these are national elections, she asked the partymen to keep the focus national.

"These are national elections. We must keep the focus national. There will, of course, be state-level issues and local level concerns that come into prominence," she said,

adding that these cannot be avoided.

She said the campaign strategy must emphasise that the forthcoming polls are for electing a national government -- a government that has an all-India perspective and a government that has the concerns for the entire country in all its many diversities and in the multitudes of the hopes and aspirations of the people.

"We will go to the people on the basis that India needs, most of all today, a national party but which is equally sensitive to regional and local sentiments," she told the

party MPs.
