J&K Assembly set for stormy session over beef ban
BJP has brought a resolution demanding capital punishment for those who violate JK constitution that calls for total ban on beef. Opposition National Conference and a few independent valley based legislators are demanding scrapping of the archaic act.

Jammu & Kashmir: The upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly session is likely to witness a stormy session between the coalition partners, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the Opposition parties preparing to raise the pitch on the beef ban issue inside the House on Saturday.

BJP has brought a resolution demanding capital punishment for those who violate JK constitution that calls for total ban on beef. Opposition National Conference and a few independent valley based legislators are demanding scrapping of the archaic act.

BJP MLA from Nowshera Ravinder Raina said, "My resolution has been rejected but I would protest vociferously."

The PDP is the only party which has gone defensive. Termed as a tactical move, Mufti Sayeed took the beef issue to Supreme Court after the Jammu and Kashmir high court gave two different directions. the high court first asked for a strict ban on beef sale and a week later said it will not come in the way if legislators wanted to scrap or amend the law.

'This is an old law and a debate is going on in the country ... We must wait for sometime till the debate is over", PDP spokesperson Wahid Para said.

The beef ban issue is bound to divide the ruling coalition with the PDP publicly demanding continuation of the traditional meat preferences, which includes beef, in the State.
