Kerala: After attacking Rahul for poll debacle, IUML softens stance
The IUML sought to make a clear distinction between the party and its mouthpiece 'Chandrika' which had criticised Rahul Gandhi.

Thiruvananthapuram: After its mouthpiece 'Chandrika' openly attacked the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for the decimation of the party, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is trying to strike a conciliatory note. MK Muneer, minsiter for Panchayaths and Social justice and state secretariat Member of the IUML, main ally of Congress in Kerala, said, "We cannot pinpoint it to one person. It is not only Rahul Gandhi, maybe various other factors which has led to this polarisation. We will have to study deeply."

He said that the Congress had put maximum efforts in the campaign but something was missing.

"In some places, the people have taken a different view. The performance of the government was also part of this. At the later stages, a lot of unpopular decisions were taken which they regret now. The campaign model which (Narendra) Modi had taken, though not that ethical, created a lot of waves across India. They had pumped money into the campaign. It was no way near to what the Congress has spent," Muneer said.

Muneer also sought to make a clear distinction between the IUML and its mouthpiece.

"The IUML mouthpiece may talk differently, but our party thinks in a different way. Party is not making any allegation against Rahul Gandhi alone. Everyone, including us, will have to work hard. Reasons for the failure are various. The first party to assess the situation of failure is the Congress itself. They will have to find a solution, because for a comeback, they will have to work hard," he said.

Muneer said that the talk about change of leadership in the Congress was its internal matter.
