New Delhi: The Lok Sabha will on Wednesday take up the Constitutional amendment for reservation in promotion for SC and ST in government jobs or the quota bill. The bill has already been passed in the Rajya Sabha despite strong opposition from the Samajwadi Party. The bill faces more trouble in the Lok Sabha with the Samajwadi Party against it and now even BJP in two minds.
SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has made it clear that his party will oppose the bill and if the government pushes it and that it may even reconsider support to UPA. The BJP, too, is now worried about losing out its upper caste votebank.
The Uttar Pradesh unit of the BJP has already passed a motion against the bill. There is a possibility that the government may do a balancing act and drag its feet over the quota bill so that SP is not upset.
The quota seeking reservations in promotions for SCs and STs has caused a stir in the BJP after the party successfully supported the bill in the Rajya Sabha. On Tuesday, at the BJP parliamentary party meeting, several leaders including Murli Manohar Joshi questioned the party's stand saying it will result in loss of support amidst the upper caste.
