Mumbai: The five Maharashtra MLAs who beat up Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Suryavanshi have been suspended till December 31. The incident took place outside the State Assembly on Tuesday.
The policeman was beaten up when MLA Kshitij Thakur moved a privilege motion against being stopped for speeding. State Home Minister RR Patil met the policeman earlier on Wednesday at St George's hospital.
Apart from Thakur, the other MLAs are Ram Kadam, Rajan Salvi, Pradeep Jaiswal and Jai Kumar Rawal. In fact, Ram Kadam has been suspended earlier too for slapping Abu Azmi in 2004. After moving the motion, MLA Kshitij Thakur pounced on Assistant Sub-Inspector Sachin Suryavanshi, who was in the visitors' gallery. Later, three others joined him.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh had on Tuesday said that an FIR has been registered against Kshitij Thakur, Ram Kadam, Rajan Salvi and Pradeep Jaiswal. Ram Kadam belongs to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Rajan Salvi is a Shiv Sena MLA, while Pradeep Jaiswal is an Independent.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had assured strict action against the guilty. "This has never happened in the history of our Assembly. Strict action will be taken after inquiry," he had said. "I express my deep regret. Action will be decided tomorrow itself. If officers have done something wrong, no one can take law in their hands for it," he added.
