Mamata government in West Bengal shifts focus from students unrest to Rosogolla
The West Bengal government has prepared a dossier to establish its supremacy and negate claims that the sweet originated in Odisha.

Kolkata: If you are struggling to find the connection between two sets of pictures – students’ unrest and a bitter fight over a very sweet thing, no worries, because the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has an answer. That's because it has decided to shift focus from the troubles brewing at Presidency University to something more syrupy...The Rosogolla! Or so, it seems.

The state government has prepared a dossier to establish its supremacy and negate claims that the sweet originated in Odisha. It is set to present the research-based counter claim before the Union Commerce Ministry soon.

Some feel that it's baffling as to why when students at a premier institution hold the government responsible for compromising campus autonomy and hold its vice chancellor captive for over a day, the Mamata Banerjee administration seems more keen on fighting a gastronomical war with Odisha over Rosogolla. Sweet? Many would differ.

The agitating students of Presidency feel that the government has so far turned a deaf ear to their demands. Objecting to the state's priority of agenda, the sarcasm in the tones of these students were hard to miss.

But given the state's involvement with the issue, it wasn't a surprise that a minister of Mamata Banerjee administration launched a book in Kolkata on Monday which traces the origin of Rosogolla and vindicates the state's claim.

While it seems that the war over the quintessential sweet is far from over, many have started to question whether it’s a battle worth winning.

What's your reaction?
