New Delhi: With just over a month to go before the UP Assembly elections, troubles seem to be getting bigger for Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party government.
On a day when the Chief Minister survived a floor test and Supreme Court hauled up his government for providing gunners to Lucknow University students, more turbulence was in store.
The state Opposition parties on Thursday staged a walkout from the Legislative Council alleging Mulayam government was shielding culprits in the infamous madarsa rape case.
The incident occurred last week when two teenaged girls – students of a madarsa on the outskirts of Allahabad - were reportedly dragged out of their hostel and gangraped by some masked people.
Incidentally, the school is run by the brother of Varanasi blast accused Waliullah, currently in prison.
The BJP-led Opposition resorted to slogan shouting during the Zero Hour, alleging Mulayam government was trying to shield a land mafia, close to Samajwadi Party, who was involved in the incident.
Leader of the Teachers' group Om Prakash Sharma was quoted as saying by PTI that the incident was “unfortunate” and his group would send a team of lady teachers to Allababad to inquire into the matter.
Sharma also called for a state-wide teachers strike on January 31 to boycott the state government’s apathy towards madarsas.
BJP leader Sheema Rizvi said the real culprits were the land mafias, and her colleague Nepal Singh termed the state government as the “government of land mafias” and demanded a CBI probe into the incident.
