It’s the semi-final battle before the big 2019 war between the BJP and the Congress. The states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram will get new governments today with significant impact on the strategy and political mood ahead of general elections next year.

Exit polls have mostly forecast a tight race between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring Chhattisgarh, while many of them have given a clear majority to the Congress against the ruling BJP in Rajasthan. For Telangana, exit polls have been divided between the TRS and the Congress-led opposition alliance. Same is the case for Mizoram where the ruling Congress is being challenged by its arch-rival in the state, Mizo National Front, while the BJP is also separately in fray.
Here's a glimpse at each state:Madhya Pradesh
A day before the counting of votes, a postman reportedly carrying over 250 postal ballots was beaten up in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh on Monday. The ballot papers were also looted from him. The police have nabbed three men in connection with the incident and the bag full of ballot papers has also been recovered.
The state of Madhya Pradesh has, in total, 82 reserved seats. In order to get a sense of who between the Congress and the BJP will get a majority, keeping an eye on trends in these 82 constituencies will be just one way to predict the elections. In the last assembly elections, the BJP took over the reins of the state with a decisive mandate by winning 59 seats. If the Congress has the edge over the BJP in the state, as some exit polls have suggested, a chunk of these seats are bound to be going in its favour. The results for the Telangana assembly elections will be declared on Tuesday, with chief minster K Chandrashekar Rao emerging as a favourite to return to power for a second term. Nearly all the exit polls predict incumbent K Chandrasekhar Rao-led Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) retaining yet another term with a clear majority although the margin varied from poll to poll.
A day ahead of counting in Telangana, leaders of the grand alliance called on the Governor, ESL Narsimhan, on Monday requesting that they should be considered first to form the government in case of a majority.
Even though the poll surveys are pointing at a TRS victory, political analysts insist that there is a high chance of arithmetic logic playing a larger role in the mandate decision. It certainly does not seem to be a smooth ride for KCR due to the anti-incumbency factor. The party has been banking on the various welfare schemes for saving grace, while at the same time claiming that the seats number would touch a 100 this time.

Chief Minister M Vasundhara Raje will seek to break this cycle and win a second term, while the Congress will look to regain lost ground in the 200-member assembly. The Congress has not yet revealed their Chief Ministerial candidate, with state Congress president Pilot and former CM Gehlot both in the fray.

The election was held on November 28 and its result will decide whether Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla of the Congress will be able to return for a third consecutive term in office. Mizoram is the last bastion of the Congress in the northeast. The Congress and the MNF have ruled Mizoram since 1987. The BJP also has set its eyes on the state this time as all other northeastern states are now ruled either by the saffron party or others supported by it. Sikkim's ruling SDF is also friendly with the BJP. No party in the state has so far been able to form governments thrice in a row since 1987 when Mizoram became a full-fledged state. The Congress and the MNF fielded 40 candidates each while the BJP contested in 39 seats. The Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM), an alliance formed by two political parties and four groups, also contested in 35 seats.

The exit polls have predicted a slim advantage for the Congress that has been out of power in Chhattisgarh since 2003, giving sleepless nights to Raman Singh, the longest-serving BJP Chief Minister who is looking to get elected for the fourth consecutive term. Here’s a look at the key constituencies in the state where many leaders are contesting again, and in some cases, fighting the same opponents.
The outcome of Chhattisgarh polls will be determined by the divisions in SC votes between Congress and Ajit Jogi, Satnamii vs OBC polarisation and the Congress’ ability to compensate the loss of Satnami votes from BJP's kitty, especially OBC votes.
