New Delhi: Defending PM Narendra Modi’s sudden move to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, Power Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday told CNN-News18 that there is no fear in the market and declared the demonetisation a historic step.
When asked if this step has dwindled the popularity of the BJP-led government at the Centre, Piyush Goyal said: “Government’s popularity has not come down due to this move and we are willing to fight an election on the same issue."
The Opposition has hurled severe criticism over the unpreparedness of the government and infrastructure to deal with note crisis. Hitting out at those criticizing the move, he said, “People with black money are the ones criticising the government’s move. Crores of people are with the government in the fight against black money."
Banks and ATMs were a witness to long queues on Saturday. Piyush Goyal, however, said that the government is monitoring the situation and warned against any “exaggeration".
The minister also claimed that the step has been hailed across the globe as it is in the larger interest of public. Taking potshots at media Goyal said: “Probably some media persons are exaggerating and sensationalizing to scare the people and I hope they realise they are only becoming unpopular."
The implementation of the government’s decision has also come under fire over the past three days. “When the cash has to reach 3-4 lakh places, it takes time," Goyal said.
