As per the numbers from the Election Commission of India, in Tamil Nadu, voter turnout was higher on just four seats out of total 39 while in Gujarat, just one seat out of 25 saw higher voter turnout than the last time.
In terms of average voter turnout, these three states, where all the seats falling under it went to polls in a single phase, have reported a drop in voter turnout.
The other two bigger states – with more than 10 Lok Sabha seats and single phase polling – were Telanaga and Andhra Pradesh. Both the southern states have reported a jump in voter turnout when compared to 2019.
In terms of individual seats, all except one seat in Telangana has seen a higher voter turnout in this time and in Andhra Pradesh, 11 out 25 seats have reported higher voter turnout.
Haryana was another state that witnessed single-phase polling and has 10 Lok Sabha seats. Earlier this week, News18 had reported that all the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana have seen a drop in voter turnout.
Punjab, with 13 Lok Sabha seats, is undergoing polling on Saturday, June 1.
The average voter turnout of Kerala (71.27 per cent), Tamil Nadu (69.72 per cent) and Gujarat (60.13 per cent) this time was lower than 2019.
Gujarat
In 2019, the average turnout on Gujarat’s 25 Lok Sabha seats was 64.51 per cent. The state has 26 Lok Sabha seats. Surat was not included in the comparison as this time, the seat elected its MP without polling.
The sole seat where the turnout has improved in the state was Banaskantha – from 65.02 per cent in 2019 to 69.62 per cent in 2024. Gujarat’s Bardoli – from 73.89 per cent to 64.81 per cent in 2024 – has seen the steepest drop in voter turnout. In Dahod, Ahmedabad East, Navsari, Vadodara and Gandhinagar also the turnout has dropped by six to seven percentage points.
In 2019, on five seats, the voter turnout was below 60 per cent and four Lok Sabha seats had a turnout above 70 per cent. Amreli (55.96 per cent) reported lowest and Valsad (75.48 per cent) reported highest voter turnout.
This time also, the two seats have been at the top and bottom but the turnout range has dropped from 50.29 per cent and 72.71 per cent.
Further, in 2024, 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state had voter turnout below 60 per cent while Valsad remained the only seat with turnout above 70 per cent.
Tamil Nadu
In 2019, the voter turnout in the state was 72.46 per cent. Two Lok Sabha seats in Chennai – South (57.07 per cent) and Central (58.98 per cent) – were the only constituencies where the turnout was below 60 per cent. Dharampuri and Namakkal were the two seats, out of 39 constituencies where the turnout was above 80 per cent. On 25 seats, the voter turnout was between 70-80 per cent.
Chennai Central (53.96 per cent) and Chennai South (54.17 per cent) yet again were the two seats with less than 60 per cent voter turnout in 2024. Dharampuri (81.2 per cent) is the sole seat where the turnout has gone beyond 80 per cent. On 22 seats, the turnout was between 70-80 per cent.
Kerala
Out of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala, eight had more than 80 per cent voter turnout in 2019. On the remaining 12 seats, the turnout was above 70 per cent. In 2019, the voter turnout in the state was 77.84 per cent.
In 2024, at least nine seats saw a turnout below 70 per cent and none of the seats reported turnout above 80 per cent.
Pathanamthitta (63.37 per cent) saw the lowest turnout in 2024 while Vadakara (78.41 per cent) reported the highest.
In 2019, Kannur saw highest turnout in the state at 83.28 per cent while the capital city Thiruvananthapuram saw 73.74 per cent turnout, lowest among the seats.
Telangana
In 2019, the average voter turnout in the 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state was 62.77 per cent that improved to 65.67 per cent this time. Except Nalgonda, all seats in the state reported improved voter turnout. This time the seat saw 74.02 per cent voter turnout, from 74.14 per cent earlier.
Hyderabad (48.48 per cent) and Secunderabad (49.04 per cent) were the least performing seats in the state this time. In 2019 as well these seats saw less than 50 per cent turnout. But in 2024, the performance has improved from the last time.
In 2019, just five seats saw more than 70% voter turnout, this time the number of seats have doubled.
At 75.29 per cent, Khammam was the highest turnout seat in the state in 2019. This time Bhongir took that position with 76.78% turnout.
Andhra Pradesh
The average voter turnout in the state has improved from 80.38 per cent in 2019 to 80.66 per cent this time.
In 2019, Bapatla (86.47 per cent) was the seat with highest voter turnout while Visakhapatnam (67.78 per cent) was the lone seat with below 70 per cent turnout. A total of 14 out of 25 seats had over 80 per cent voter turnout.
In 2024, all the seats in the state reported turnout over 70 per cent. A total of 10 seats reported turnout between 70-80 per cent while the remaining 15 saw turnout above 80 per cent.
Visakhapatnam (71.11 per cent) was the seat with lowest turnout while Ongole (87.06 per cent) was the seat with the highest turnout. Ongole was the seat with second highest voter turnout in the country among the seats that have polled in the first six phases.
