Guwahati: There has been a clash between people and police at Merapani's district near Nagaland border over the visit of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday. Locals opposed the Chief Minister's visit due to the ongoing Assam-Nagaland border conflict.
The police even fired in the air to disburse the crowd after clashes.
Gogoi had on Sunday said that the state government would submit a detailed report to the Union Home Ministry on the recent violence along the Assam-Nagaland border which claimed nine lives in Golaghat district.
"Along with the detailed report, a memorandum will also be submitted to the Union Home ministry suggesting measures needed to be taken to prevent further outbreak of violence along the disputed border," Gogoi had said.
Gogoi had directed Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla and Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Jishnu Baruah to prepare the report along with the memorandum.
The Chief Minister had also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of those killed in the violence and Rs 50,000 to those whose houses were set ablaze by miscreants from Nagaland.
Gogoi had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally intervene in restoring peace at violence affected Uriamghat.
He had requested him for additional 10 companies of CRPF personnel in the area for rapid reinforcement of security along with setting up of security pickets in the affected villages so that violence does not spread to other areas.
