New Delhi: While the UPA-II celebrates its first year in office, the Opposition BJP is observing a black day. Party workers, led by Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, protested at Jantar Mantar in the Capital against what they call the UPA's inability to control rising prices.
Party workers sported black arm bands as a sign of protest as Jaitley spoke exclusively to CNN-IBN, saying the prime minister has failed to convince the country, and the current ratings of the government will not help it in elections. He said the PM may be in power but he's not in control.
Jaitley said the prime minister's press conference was a disappointing affair as he simply dodged questions.
"The prime minister has virtually nothing to say. Are you wiser after the press conference Rajdeep? You know a little more than what you already knew about this government before this press conference started. Every question can't be answered in a sentence or two, without going into the core issues involved," said Jaitley.
"As far as governance is concerned after one year speaks very poorly of the performance of the UPA government. Therefore the effort was really to dodge and not to answer and that was the press conference all about," he added.
How does the prime minister intend to tackle differences within the UPA on the Maoists, he asked, saying initiative against the Naxals is weak and they will speak against it.
Jaitley said the government is in trouble and he is not sure if it will last full five years. "Political power is not immortal, if you don't perform then perish. Divisions within the government are not a sign of strength," he said, adding "the PM is decent, but he can't check corruption of his colleagues."
