New Delhi: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi took a dig at Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on the BJP leader's 64th birthday on Tuesday, saying unlike the opposition which makes tall claims and works for rich, the party always stood by the poor and believes in helping them realise their dreams.

Not only Rahul, even an Islamic cleric who offered a skull cap, which Modi refused to wear during his Sadbhavna rally in Gujarat, hit out at the Gujarat Chief Minister. He alleged that Modi does not have goodwill towards the Muslim community.

"I had gone to the Sadbhavna fast with no ill feelings. I gave him a skull cap, but he told me he does not wear a cap. It proves that he has no goodwill towards anyone. Those wearing skullcaps at the function were not Muslims, but manual labourers paid Rs 200 to be there," Imam Shahid Saiyed said.

Earlier, making a smart move and trying to reach out to the minorities, the Bharatiya Janata Party embarked on a drive to recruit members of the minority community. The Bharatiya Janata Minority Morcha decided to register about 1 lakh Muslims into the BJP on the occasion of Modi's birthday. It is going to be a week long drive and will be held in all the districts of Gujarat.

Rahul, who was addressing a rally at Baran district of Rajasthan, attacked the opposition parties saying, "The Congress worked for the aam aadmi not just a selected few." Hitting out at the opposition parties, he said there are two ideologies in politics today, one of the Congress and other of the opposition parties who are thinking only about a selected few.

Taking a pride at UPA government pet projects the Food Security Bill and the Land Acquisition Bill which were passed in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Rahul highlighted the work done by the Centre to benefit the poor.

He hit out the opposition for resisting the passage of the Food Bill in Parliament and MNREGA on the plea that there would be constraint of funds and accused them of working only for the elite.
