Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday witnessed uproarious scenes over the issue of custodial death of a National Conference worker, Saeed Yousuf.
The exchange between the Speaker, Mohammad Akbar Lone, and Opposition PDP members got heated as the proceedings of the assembly began for the day.
While the Speaker abused the members of the Opposition, a fan was hurled at him by one of the members of the assembly.
PDP members demanded the suspension of the Question Hour to discuss the matter, which agitated the treasury benches who also took to their feet.
In the course of the heated exchange, Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone and PDP MLA Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain traded charges against each other.
An agitated Speaker took strong exception to Hussain's charges.
Following the uproar, the Speaker adjourned the House for half-an-hour.
Reacting to the chaos in the Assembly, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti alleged that the Chief Minister could go up to any extent to silence the Opposition, and the members were scared.
Slamming the Speaker over his act, she said, "The CM is allegedly involved in a murder. What can you expect from a Speaker? He has always been biased."
"Speaker abuses us, uses derogatory language. This is the way Speaker behaves."
The Opposition PDP is set to move an adjournment motion in the assembly on Monday for discussion on the mysterious death of the NC worker in police custody.
The top brass in the Jammu and Kashmir government meanwhile defended Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. They even released a CCTV camera video showing Saeed Yousuf leaving the CM's house to show he didn't die there.
Yousuf died in police custody after the CM handed him over to the crime department. He had collected nearly Rs one crore from two people promising them a ministerial berth and a place in the state legislative council.
