Sandeshkhali Row: Mamata Says Culprits Won't Be Spared, Accuses BJP of Inciting Violence
Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in the Assembly issued her response on the Sandeshkhali incident and said, "I have never allowed, will never allow any injustice to anyone"

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday reacted to the ongoing situation in Sandeshkhali and said she has never allowed any “injustice” to anyone. She, however, accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of inciting trouble on the island in North 24 Parganas district.

“I have never supported injustice in my life. I sent a few representatives of the state women commission to Sandeshkhali immediately and 17 people have been arrested,” the Bengal Chief Minister said in the state Assembly as the Opposition BJP staged a walkout over the issue.

Banerjee further stated that the state government is looking into the Sandeshkhali situation and no one involved in any wrongdoing will be spared. “A ‘sinister design is at play’ to foment trouble in the area and the state government has taken all necessary actions to control the situation,” she added.

Mamata Blames BJP

Blaming the saffron party for the unrest, the TMC supremo said that the BJP targeted local Trinamool leader Sheikh Shahjahan through the Enforcement Directorate. “First, they entered the area and targeted Sheikh Shahjahan through ED and then they started the trouble thereby getting people in.”

Shahjahan, a local strongman, has been on the run for a month now after ED officials who visited the island to raid his home came under attack by the mob.

“There is an RSS base in Sandeshkhali. There were riots earlier too,” she added.

Sandeshkhali Row

The protests in Sandeshkhali persisted for the eighth consecutive day on Thursday, with a significant number of women taking to the streets, demanding the arrest of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his followers. The accusations against Shajahan Sheikh and his aides include forcefully capturing land and sexually harassing women.

Meanwhile, the BJP targeted the TMC government in the state over the allegations against its leader. However, the ruling party has denied the charges and said the BJP is trying to create unrest in the area.
