TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu and Janasena chief Pawan Kalyan on Saturday announced their first joint list of 118 candidates for the forthcoming Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh.
The two leaders, however, said the seat allocation had been done keeping in mind the need to accommodate the BJP in case the saffron party decides to join the alliance.
TDP candidates will be contesting from 94 constituencies while Janasena will contest from 24 seats, as per the first list. “This union is for the future of the state. This is the first step for a great effort,” said Naidu, addressing a press conference at his Andhra Pradesh residence in Undavalli on the TDP-Janasena alliance.
“TDP-JSP is ready for election war. This alliance is for the state’s future and the brighter future of Andhra Pradesh,” said Naidu.
Simultaneous elections are planned for 175 assembly seats and 25 parliament seats in Andhra Pradesh. More than two weeks ago, Mr. Naidu met with JP Nadda and Amit Shah, in Delhi. The meeting comes with the hope that Jana Sena head Pawan Kalyan and all three parties will unite to take on the ruling YSRCP.
With Mr. Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party, or TDP, fielding the most new candidates—a significant change in the state’s politics—the names were crowdsourced from one crore individuals.
TDP sources said currently discussions were underway with the BJP for a possible pre-poll alliance.
The incumbent YSRCP, led by Jagan Reddy, according to Chandrababu Naidu, has distributed names through camp offices, whereas the TDP-JSP list is “not only inclusive but also revolutionary”.
