Thousands pay homage to Karunakaran
Prime minister Manmohan Singh will also pay his respects to the departed leader.

Thrissur: Thounsands of people from all parts of Kerala paid homage to Veteran Congress leader, K Karunakaran, whose body was brought to Thrissur on Saturday morning from the state capital.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh is expected to arrive in Thrissur by 2:00 PM to pay his respects to Karunakaran, who died in Thiruvananthapuram on December 23 evening.

In view of the Prime Minister's visit, security has been tightened in thrissur. Over 2000 police personnel drawn from the neighbouring districts have been deployed in and around thee town.

As the hearse carrying the body began its journey from Thiruvananthapuram to Thrissur on Friday, hunderds of people lined up on roads in various places to catch a glimps of their 'leader' as he was fondly called.

Police had a difficult time to control the crowd at various places. The body arrived at Kochi early Saturday morning and many could be seen waiting to pay respects.

Union Defence Minister, AK Antony, Minister of State for Railways, E Ahamed, Opposition leader, Oommen Chandy, KPCC President, Ramesh Chennitala, and various other political leaders, including MP Veerendra Kumar, Hyder Ali Shihab Thangal and PK Kunhalikutty were among those who are at the Town Hall where the body has been kept for the public to pay homage.

The cremation will take place at 'Muralimandiram', Karnakaran's house at Punkunnam in Thrissur next to the tomb of his wife Kalyanikutty Amma.

Only close relatives will be allowed to attend the cremation.
