New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday witnessed a heated argument between Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati over Dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula's suicide.
The BSP was in the well of the House since the commencement of the day demanding justice for Rohith's family and resignation for Irani. Mayawati has been demanding answers from the government on whether a Dalit is a part of the committee that is looking into Rohith Vemula suicide case or not.
In reply Smriti said, "'Mai vinamar nivedan karti hun aap mujhse varisth hai, mahila hai. Agar aap mera jawab chahti hai toh mai jawab dene ko tyaar hun. Aapki jo-jo maange hai, mai subah se sun rahi hun behenji. Mai aapse se kehti hun agar mere jawab se aap santusht nai ho, toh iss sabah mei kehti hun Mayawati ji, mai BSP ke ek-ek karyakarta aur aapke netaon se kehti hun, sar kalam karke aapke charon mei chod denge agar aap jawab se aap asantusht ho. Sun lijiye aap mera jawab'. (I request you, Mayawati ji. I am ready to give reply. I have been listening to your demands since morning. And if you are unsatisfied with my reply, then I will put my head in your feet.)"
BSP members forced five adjournments in the pre-lunch session raising slogans that the "anti-Dalit, anti-Ambedkar" government will not be allowed to run, even as party chief Mayawati dubbed the incident an "insult to 25 crore Dalits" in the country.
The pandemonium in the Upper House began virtually from the start. Even though a discussion on the issue was listed for Wednesday, Mayawati wanted a response from the government to her demand for resignation of the union ministers allegedly linked to the suicide, sacking of the Vice Chancellor of University of Hyderabad and inclusion of a Dalit member in the judicial committee probing the suicide.
