Hours after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday, actor Mithun Chakraborty said he won’t jump any queues for the role of the chief minister.
“If it (CM’s post) comes to me via protocol then I will consider it… but I will not jump the protocol,” he told CNN-News18 in Kolkata after sharing stage with PM Modi.
Mithun’s entry into the BJP ended days of speculation over his political innings. The veteran actor was present at the Brigade Parade ground in Kolkata where Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a mega rally.
BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya met Chakraborty on Saturday evening at his Kolkata residence and announced that the actor will attend PM Modi’s rally. He was present on stage with Chakraborty on Sunday and welcomed him to the party.
Clad in a Kurta, cap and sunglasses, the actor recited some of his famous dialogues, saying, “I am proud to be a Bengali. I know you love my dialogues. Marbo ekhaney…lash porbay shoshaney (‘I will thrash you here. Your body will be found at the crematorium; from the film MLA fatakeshto).”
He then said, “Here is my new dialogue. I am not a jol dora snake. I am not a beleghora snake. I am a pure cobra. I strike and you become a photograph.”
“My politics may be extreme but I am not with extremists. I won’t blame anyone but my choice to join TMC was wrong…I am not a leader. I was strongly involved in ultra left politics. I believe and still believe that I can help the poor. I supported Jyoti Basu and Subhas Chakraborty because they were people’s leaders,” said Chakraborty.
“I will work for the poor just like I have portrayed myself in films. I have helped many off screen but I never publicised it. BJP is trying to do something for the poor and if I am trying to help the poor then I need some help…I need to hold someone’s hand,” he said.
Recently, popular Bengali actor Yash Dasgupta had joined the BJP along with more than half a dozen actors, including Papiya Adhikari, a veteran. A day before Dasgupta’s entry into politics, Chakraborty made headlines by hosting Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat at his Mumbai bungalow.
The actor praised PM Modi and said that his decision to join BJP was to do good for the poor. “BJP is constantly trying to do good to the poor and that’s why I am there. PM Modi wanted me to make everyone come together to make a golden Bengal and I want to be a part of this journey,” he said.
The BJP’s journey of making inroads into Tollywood began in 2019 after the party won 18 of Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha seats. On July 18 that year, as many as 13 actors joined the BJP in Delhi and Kolkata. While none of them are stars, all are popular faces on television or the big screen. welcomed him to the party.
