Agriculture has always been a consistent contributor to the economy of India. Earlier, this occupation encompassed only farmers from villages, who had huge lands and were uneducated. Now, things have changed. From high-paying professionals to housewives, everyone has now ventured into modern farming to try their luck. A Pune woman named Swati Kendre is one of them. She used to do traditional farming; but now, has adopted modern farming methods after opening a playhouse on her land to cultivate Gerbera flowers. As per reports, she is now earning lakhs by selling those flowers in the market. She has 30 Guntha of land, which is approximately over 30,000 square feet.
Swati Kendre is a farmer from Balawadi village in Bhor taluka of Pune, who is cultivating Gerbera flowers with the support of her husband Amit Dnyaneshwar. Her husband is currently working at Pune District Central Cooperative Bank. He continuously encouraged cash farming and got polyhouses constructed for farming. Along with this, he also supported his wife in the use of chemical fertilisers, manure, proper weed control, water management, pesticides, and organic bacterial fertilisers. The couple planned to sell the Gerbera flowers as they are always in demand. They cultivate thousands of Gerbera flowers on their land. While talking to Local18, they said that before planting 18 thousand Gerbera plants, one-and-a-half tonne paddy husk and 25 trolley cow dung are mixed in the field. It is followed by ploughing the field for at least three to four times. Two days after releasing the water, beds are prepared and 18 thousand saplings of rice and shine Gerbera are planted.
Swati Kendre always had an interest in agriculture. She decided to focus her attention on modern farming methods instead of traditional agriculture for better yield and profit.
At the time of festivals, celebrations and weddings there is a huge demand for these flowers. It is often used for decoration purposes at the events. Swati Kendre said that this crop is a good source of earnings because it is produced throughout the year. As per Swati, 300 bunches of Gerbera flowers are sent to the Gultekdi flower market in Pune everyday. The couple sells their flowers for the price ranging from Rs 20 to 90 as per the demand in the market.
