Malayalam actress Shwetha Menon is ready for the release of her upcoming film Badal. Known for portraying fierce on-screen characters, she will be seen slipping into the shoes of a Naxalite in this political thriller. Helmed by debutant director G Ajayan, Badal’s trailer rightfully grabbed the eyeballs of movie enthusiasts. Now, adding to the excitement of the masses, it has been announced that the film will hit the big screens on April 5. Besides Shwetha Menon, Badal also stars Salim Kumar, Joy Mathew, Ambika Mohan, and Gayathri Suresh in important roles.

Badal mainly centres around a tale of about 3,000 people inhabiting tribal regions in India. Newcomer Netu Mohan has been roped in for a special role. Produced by Joseph Varghese under the banners of Alternate Cinemas, the film focuses on the relationship between man and nature. It aims to shed light on the lives of armed fighters or Naxalites who reside in the forests, facing oppression and exploitation from the hierarchical power system.

Shwetha Menon looks unrecognisable in the trailer. She takes up weapons and fights like a lone warrior with police personnel. As per the textual layout, the film is based on “actual events". Badal also promises umpteen fight sequences and tear-jerking moments.

Earlier, in an interaction with ETimes, Shwetha Menon revealed some details about Badal. According to the actress, she plays the role of a Naxalite named Kanimozhi in the film. Speaking about why decided to take up the role, Shwetha said, “I wanted to understand about Maoists, their protests, history, and the film helped me with the same. A few people belonging to certain tribes in Kerala helped me get the character’s language right."

Heaping praise on Badal’s director G Ajayan, Shwetha Menon said that although he was a newbie, Ajayan was a “talented theatre person" who harboured a clear vision of the film. She added that it was the director who urged her to take up the film. “(He) used to tell me, ‘Shwethaji, you should do this film, you are the only one who can play Kanimozhi," disclosed Shwetha.

Badal took almost three years to shoot, reports TOI. The film was exclusively shot in the forests of Palakkad, Attappadi, and Munnar.
