In the upcoming year, Indian cinema is set to witness a groundbreaking spectacle as the Prabhas-starrer Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin, gears up for release. Notably, this cinematic extravaganza is positioned to be the most expensive Indian film ever made, with a staggering budget of Rs 600 crore, marking a significant milestone in the industry. Adding to the allure, the star-studded cast features iconic figures like Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan, alongside leading actresses Deepika Padukone and Disha Patani in pivotal roles.
The film, a blend of science fiction and mythological elements, draws intrigue with Amitabh Bachchan reportedly portraying the character of Aswatthama, the son of Dronacharya from the epic Mahabharata. The convergence of top-tier talent and an unprecedented budget has generated substantial anticipation for Kalki 2898 AD.
Originally revealed in February 2020 with the working title Project K, the film aimed to commemorate Vyjayanthi Movies’ 50th anniversary. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted production, leading to a one-year delay. Filming commenced in July 2021 at Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City, where an elaborate futuristic set was constructed. Noteworthy is the bilingual nature of the film, being simultaneously shot in Hindi and Telugu.
The initial reception of the first look of “Kalki 2898 AD” has been mixed among fans. While the visual effects have earned acclaim, some observant viewers have drawn comparisons between Prabhas’ suit and Marvel’s Iron Man character. Anticipation has now shifted to the impending release of the trailer, expected to provide a more comprehensive glimpse into the film’s fantastical world.
Nag Ashwin recently engaged with students at a college fest held at IIT Bombay, fielding questions from eager fans. When asked about the much-anticipated trailer, he shared that it is slated for release on April 1. However, given that April 1 is widely recognised as April Fool’s Day, scepticism has arisen among a section of fans who wonder if the filmmaker might be engaging in playful banter. Despite the potential for jest, if the announcement proves accurate, April 1 will mark a significant date for eager fans, offering them an exciting preview into the visual spectacle that Kalki 2898 AD promises to be.
