The government's crackdown on 857 pornographic websites was met with protests and has subsequently led to a step down. While the long continuing debate on to ban or not to ban porn continues, we attempt to understand how Indians have been seeking porn online.
Google is by far the largest search engine in India and for many users Google is the gateway to other parts of the Internet.
An analysis of a year's data (July 2014 to June 2015) of Google search volume for the 'porn' keyword in India throws up many interesting observations.
- There are an average of 4.09 million monthly searches for 'porn' on Google in India
- Amongst cities, New Delhi accounts for the most searches for porn with 16.3% of the total search volume followed by Bengaluru (8.8%), Mumbai (8.6%), Pune (8.5%) and Kolkata (4.6%).
- The state with the highest number of searches for 'porn' is Maharashtra (23.1%), followed by Karnataka (10.0%), Gujarat (6.3%), West Bengal (5.3%) and India's most populous state Uttar Pradesh accounts for only 4.7%.
- The total search volume for 'porn' in India has seen a a substantial rise (over 20%) from 2014 to 2015.
- About three-fourths of the searches for porn in India come from mobile devices.
