Instagram usage doubled in 2 years: Report
The report found that about 30 per cent of internet users have Instagram accounts, as compared to 18 per cent in 2013.

Facebook's photo-oriented Instagram service has doubled its reach in the two years since 2013, according to a new report.

A Global Web Index analysis of social media use in 2015 has discovered that 30 per cent of internet users have Instagram accounts, as compared to 18 per cent in 2013.

Perhaps more significantly for an image-based social network which thrives on user generated content, Instagram's core of active users has increased from 8 per cent to 15 per cent over the same timespan.

Other information from the GWI Social Q3 2015 report shows that time spent on all kinds of social network services has continued to rise, up from a daily average of 1.61 hours in 2012 to 1.77 hours per day in 2015.

Those aged between 16-24 tend to spend more time on social networks, 2.68 hours per day, though 25-34 year olds are also well invested at 2.16 hours.

There's also an inverse relationship between income and social media use, GWI reports: "digital consumers in the lowest quartile are the biggest networkers," the agency says.

Meanwhile, digital consumers in general will have accounts with 6 or more social networks.

For example, the average Facebook user is now likely to have 4.3 social network accounts, up from 2.5 in 2012.

Countries whose residents poll above average for multi-networking include India, Indonesia and China, where up to 8 accounts is not out of the ordinary, while those in Sweden, the UK and USA also came out ahead of the global average.

Facebook acquired Instagram in April 2012.
