Google is commemorating 136th birth anniversary of great Indian writer Premchand. Born on July 31, 1880 in Lamhi near Varanasi, as Dhanpat Rai, Premchand has authored over a dozen novels, 250 short stories, and a number of essays.
His work is a crucial part of Hindi literature even in the modern times. However, it wasn't until later in life that Premchand really focused on his writing.
He worked as a teacher before joining the non-cooperation movement led by Mahatma Gandhi in the 1920s. His writings, which draw inspiration from Gandhi, brought to light some of India's social issues from the pre-independent era.
Some of Premchand's famous works include Bade Bhaisaab, Gaban, Poos Ki Raat and Idgaah.
Inspired by his last and most famous novel, Godaan (1936), today's doodle pays tribute to the 'Upanyas Samrat' who brought his signature working-class characters to life.
