Netflix is reportedly testing a new mobile plan that will let users stream content in HD resolution with support for multiple devices like laptop, tablet, and phone. The plan worth Rs 299 is an upgraded version of the Rs 199 mobile plan that offers content in 480p resolution with support for devices such as phones and tablets and not PCs. Earlier in 2020, the streaming giant had also tested another plan worth Rs 349 (per month) to let users stream content in HD on a single device at a time. Netflix’s existing Rs 499 SD plan lets users stream content either on their phone, tablet, PC or a Smart TV.
According to The Indian Express quoting a Netflix spokesperson, the Mobile plus plan will roll out to more users after receiving user feedback. “We launched the mobile plan in India to make it easier for anyone with a smartphone to enjoy Netflix. We want to see if members like the added choice Mobile Plus brings. We’ll only roll it out long-term if they do,” the spokesperson told the publication.
The Rs 299 Netflix Mobile Plus plan may end up being the preferred subscription model by new customers as the existing Basic and Mobile plans offer videos in only SD (480p) resolution. As smartphones and other devices are improving their display tech, HD content will have an edge over the standard 480p resolution. Netflix offers 4K or Ultra-HD content in India with a single Premium plan that cost Rs 799 per month. The Standard Netflix with a monthly rent of 699 offers HD quality videos on TV, laptop, mobiles, and tablets.
Currently, OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus Hotstar are facing heat from the central government in the form of new rules for content regulation. Recently, the Supreme Court also favoured a screening mechanism for online video streaming services in the country.
