At the RIL Annual General Meeting, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced the commercial launch of Reliance Jio. The highly-anticipated tariff plans are expected to disrupt the telecom market.

The company officially announced that its Jio services will be offered at substantially lower rates than rivals and that they will offer the lowest 4G data rates in the world.

Jio’s base data tariff will cost one-tenth of existing rates being charged currently. Reliance Jio will charge Rs 50 per GB of data with basic plan starting at Rs 149/month for light users and going up to Rs 4,999 for heavy users. Students will get 25 per cent more data and incentives on Jio’s main tariffs.

Ambani further announced that no Jio customer will ever pay for voice calls to any network in India and there will be zero roaming charges.

Taking ahead the agenda of enabling a ‘Digital Life for Digital India’, Ambani said that the company will further connect 30,000 colleges and schools with WiFi and high speed internet.

Under the Jio Welcome Offer starting September 5, 2016, all the data plans, voice, video, apps, and content will be available at no cost till December 31, 2016.
