New Delhi: After Apple’s iPhone upgrade program, Samsung is reportedly going to offer a similar service that allows users to lease its flagship smartphones sans a carrier-bound contract.
Industry executives with knowledge of the matter told Forbes that Samsung is also planning to launch a leasing program for its Galaxy smartphones in the US.
Apple’s iPhone upgrade program allows users to own the new smartphones directly from Apple without getting locked into the two-year contract plan by carriers. It is offering the $32/month two-year agreement in which users can get new iPhones every year along with Apple Care services.
For long, mobile carriers had been selling smartphones at subsidised rates for two-year contract lock-ins. As they are moving away from the traditional two-year contract model, smartphone makers seem to have adopted the new leasing program to make their premium devices available to users easily.
There is no word on the pricing of the purported leasing program by Samsung, but it is likely to be launched in the coming weeks.
