Backward compatibility, or the ability to transfer over one’s game experience and levels, for Xbox One will allow you to play your favourite games from the older console onto the new one, with no harm to your completed levels.

New Delhi: Gamers who didn’t part with their older Xbox 360 console, simply because of the game compatibility have a reason to celebrate as Microsoft announced backward compatibility of Xbox One at the ongoing E3 conference in Los Angeles.

Backward compatibility, or the ability to transfer over one’s game experience and levels, for Xbox One will allow you to play your favourite games from the older console onto the new one, with no harm to your completed levels.

This added ability comes as Microsoft aims to catch up in the console wars and help gamers embrace the new console. In April, the company had sold 10 million Xbox One units since its launch in November 2013. Competitor Sony, meanwhile, had been able to sell 22.3 million PlayStation 4s by March.

The compatibility has been added to select games like ‘Mass Effect’ and some 300,000 players in Microsoft’s preview program will be able to enjoy the feature, all for free; unlike Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription service, which offers older PS3 games for streaming but costs $50 a year.
