Jannik Sinner Pips Daniil Medvedev in Five-Set Comeback Thriller to Win 2024 Australian Open
Sinner got the better of his fiery opponent Medvedev in a heated contest of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 that lasted for 3 hours and 43 minutes to clinch his maiden Grand Slam title.

World No. 4 Jannik Sinner finally got his hands on the coveted silverware as he defeated World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev in a five-set slogfest at the Rod Laver Arena to win the 2024 Australian Open.

Sinner got the better of his fiery opponent Medvedev in a heated contest of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 that lasted for 3 hours and 43 minutes to clinch his maiden Grand Slam title.

This is just the second time in the last 13 years that someone except the big three of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal have won the Australian Open, with the other exception being that of Stanislas Wawrinka who clinched the title in 2014.

Sinner drew first blood as he secured the first game of the first set. But, a relentless Medvedev fought back with venom to take the next three games in a row and build a lead that he would not concede till the end, as the Russian steamrolled the Italian to clinch the first set 6-3.

There would be no doubting the Italian’s grit to fight back hard, but Medvedev’s momentum was already in full flow. After a 1-1 draw in the second set, the Russian would accelerate to take a dominant 5-1 lead over Sinner.  The 23-year-old would claw back to win the next couple of games, but Medvedev remained at ease and swept him away to once again clinch another set 6-3, and take a two-set lead over the Italian.

With Daniil Medvedev one set away from eternal glory, Sinner had to dig deep and muster up a comeback. The third set was a slogfest as both finalists went back and forth, exchanging blows and clinching games in turns.

Sinner kept the upper hand as he started off the set with the first win, but Medvedev kept clawing back every next game to keep the Italian on his toes as the set drew to a 4-4 standstill.

The Italian then, seemingly on cue, took the ninth game away from Medvedev and inched ahead of the Russian 5-4. With one game left to push the World No.3 to a fourth set, Sinner slugged it out in a intense tiebreak to finally chip away at the Russian’s two-set lead and clinch the third set 6-4.

The fourth set started off in similar fashion as that of the previous set, with both players exchanging games back and forth to keep the pressure on.

Yet again, the set stood still at 4-4, as neither player was willing to give away anything. Someone had to break away, and it was not a question of who, but when.

It was Sinner though, who once again went on a rampage to secure the next two games to clinch the set 6-4 again and force a frustrated Medvedev to one last set where the winner would take it all.

One last set to go, one last chance at glory for both players.

Sinner in classic fashion broke through first and clinched the first game away, only for Medvedev to fight back even harder and tie the set up in the next game.

The tension could have been cut with a knife as both players kept the pressure at an all-time high, as the set was tied at 2-2.

And this was when Sinner kicked into another gear as the Italian dug deep and broke through to clinch the next three games in a row and take a 5-2 lead over the Russian.

Despite Medvedev’s best efforts, Sinner clinched the set in the ninth game and clinched in 6-3 to win the match and the title.
