Getting on a jungle safari is the epitome of every nature enthusiast’s dream, especially when the prospect of getting to see elusive creatures like tigers or lions looms tantalisingly close. The blend of excitement and fear is palpable, for in the wild, every sighting promises an intimate rendezvous with the untamed ‘Animal’ kingdom. Yet, amidst this thrill, the importance of meticulous planning and safety precautions cannot be overstated to ward off potential perilous encounters.
However, in a recent episode witnessed by a resident of Dehradun, the essence of responsible exploration was flouted by a group of tourists who, in pursuit of fun, engaged in foolish antics during their safari expedition.
Fortunately, the situation didn’t escalate into tragedy, but the concerned observer took action by capturing the scene and sharing it on social media to raise awareness. Anand Sankar, in his post on ‘X’, depicted the scene with joker emojis humourously superimposed on the faces of the tourists, highlighting the absurdity of their behaviour (without revealing their identities). The scene depicted a child seated on a man’s lap, both perilously perched outside the confines of the jeep, with a distant tiger icon serving as a stark reminder of the surrounding dangers. Sankar recounted the nerve-wracking ordeal, underscoring the futile attempts of drivers, guides, and himself to dissuade the tourists from their precarious positions.

Furthermore, he emphasised, “I had a detailed chat with guides and drivers after my safari. Poor chaps are almost in tears that tourists simply don’t listen. If some accident happens the first people who get blamed are guides + drivers for no fault of theirs. Worse of some tourist fatality happens, poor guides + drivers have to face police cases that last year’s! Tourists treat them like ‘naukars’ they say and are forced to hear choicest of abuses when they tell tourists to behave appropriately.”
The viral post sparked a wave of concern and calls for action against careless tourists, with commenters reminiscing about past tragedies and advocating for stringent measures to enforce discipline.
3 x + 1 & 1 at the safari yesterday.I was very tempted to face-shame all of the s in this post.
All the drivers + guides + ME repeatedly told the s to not sit like that and hold the .
s refused to listen. Instead the holding the was almost about to… pic.twitter.com/VpxDyhmp1J

“When I saw this pic, the first thing I remembered was about a kid that was sitting in her grandfather’s lap snatched by a Tiger in Bannerghatta Safari Park, Bangalore in 1992. It was so fast nobody had time to react or save the kid,” shared one in the comment.
“Still not able to digest!! It’s impossible to get self discipline here. Strict Laws with heavy fines is the only way. Jeeps Can be semi closed instead of caged, where a person cannot go out once closed. Camera can be fitted in Jeeps to put fear of laws including for guides,” expressed another.
The third one said, “There should be systems for penalising this kind of people, first warning and then some example setting.”

Truly, why discipline seems to move at a snail’s pace remains one of life’s enduring mysteries!
