A woman’s social media post seeking an “easy-going” flatmate who speaks Hindi and is vegetarian has been doing the rounds on social media, but not for the reasons she intended. The woman, who goes on X (formerly Twitter) as Vanshita, outlined her search for a female flatmate to occupy a room in a 3BHK apartment at a prime location in Bengaluru. While she preferred a “Hindi-speaking” vegetarian flatmate, she shared that her new flatmate should be okay with “alcohol, smoke and loud music”.
Vanshita stated that she is looking for someone who can move in “immediately”, specifying, “a young person with XX chromosomes, easy-going, and comfortable with guests, pets, loud music, alcohol, and smoke; preferably vegetarian and Hindi-speaking”.
In the listing, Vanshita mentioned that the monthly rent for the room is Rs 17,000, which includes amenities such as “a big bed, mattress, AC, geyser, storage units, wardrobe and a wall-mount desk”. Additionally, the room comes with an attached washroom and a balcony. The prospective flatmate would need to pay a Rs 70,000 security deposit, Rs 17,000 rent, and a Rs 12,000 setup fee.
The 3BHK apartment, located on the second floor in Bengaluru’s Wilson Garden, is equipped with a “fridge, mixer, and washing machine”. Vanshita noted that she would be “overjoyed” if the new tenant could bring a TV along, as the flat currently lacks one. She also highlighted that the building does not have a lift.
Vanshita listed several advantages of the flat, such as its proximity to the metro, cafes, and a park, describing it as a “steal deal”. She did, however, include a disclaimer: “I am a bit annoying and much of a clean freak (kitchen especially),” while expressing her excitement about meeting her new flatmate.
The listing drew criticism from many, who pointed out the contradiction in the woman seeking a vegetarian flatmate while insisting that the person should be comfortable with drinking, smoking, and loud music.
“Bro, non-veg isn’t allowed in my house either, but smoking and alcohol aren’t allowed as well. Smoking and alcohol are more harmful than non-veg,” said an individual.
Another added, “Alcohol and smoking is okay but vegetarianism is where you draw the line. LMAO.”
“Everything is fine but what is discrimination like you can smoke and drink but can’t eat non-veg?” commented yet another.
In response, Vanshita explained, “It’s not about health. This is a flatmate requirement post. It’s about comfort and peace in the house. I don’t mind any form of cooked food but I am a vegetarian and hence can’t stand the sight of raw meat. And I am very social hence I keep having friends over.”
Another X user highlighted the language preference that the woman sought: “All ok & understandable. No offence but in a city like Bengaluru where largely most speak & are comfortable in English why does this final condition give preference to Hindi? Would a Tamilian, Malyali, Marathi or a Kannadathi from the north not be ok just because they don’t speak Hindi.”
“I know everyone is clowning her on the nonveg part but it’s the ‘Hindi speaking’ that does it for me. She is in Bangalore and wrote this in English. You need one language to communicate. If you’re not gonna learn Kannada (you should), say ‘Hindi or English speaking,’” said another.
