Two unidentified people posing as crime branch officials stole Rs 5 lakh from a Mumbai lawyer. The Khar police have filed a case against the culprits, who impersonated crime branch agents before robbing Tausif Sheikh while conducting what appeared to be an inquiry. According to Khar police, the 37-year-old victim is a lawyer who lives in Bandra. Sheikh filed a complaint, reported news agency ANI.
Sheikh said that his relatives run a travel agency and money transfer services. He occasionally helped them, including transferring funds into the firm’s bank account for money transfers. According to Sheikh’s complaint, on September 7, his brother gave him Rs 5.7 lakh to deposit into two client’s accounts. Sheikh intended to make the deposit the following morning. However, after depositing Rs 70,000 into one client’s account, two men approached Sheikh at an ATM entryway. They claimed to be from the Crime Branch and requested that Sheikh accompany them for questioning.
The Khar police said that the imposters then forced Sheikh into a car, examined his bag and questioned him about the money. They threatened to file a complaint against him but later said they needed to make multiple arrests and would be quite busy. They then asked him to exit the van at Santacruz before fleeing with his money.
Sheikh, distraught after the robbery, returned home and informed his brother about the incident. Upon hearing what had happened, Sheikh’s brother immediately reported the theft to the police.
In addition to cheating, the Khar Police have also charged the accused duo with impersonation. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the location where the lawyer was “detained” to identify the vehicle registration number and track down the suspects.
The lawyer described the two accused to the police as being around 5.5 feet tall and in their 30s. One was wearing a blue shirt and jeans, while the other was dressed in a white shirt and khaki pants. The Khar police have filed a case against the two individuals and have initiated an investigation into the incident.
