A lawyer from Brazil has tragically died in a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) room after bringing a loaded gun. According to a Jam Press report, the accident occurred on January 16 while the lawyer brought his loaded licensed weapon to the Laboratorio Cura hospital’s MRI scanning room.
Demised identified as Leandro Mathias de Novaes, a 40-year-old lawyer was carrying a concealed gun to the hospital while accompanying his mother for an appointment. As per the reports, the man’s licensed weapon concealed under his waistband was pulled out of its place by the magnetic forces from the MRI machine. The powerful magnetic was strong enough to pull his stomach out of his body.
Following the unfortunate event, the Laboratorio Cura hospital released an official statement. As the Miami Herald reported, the statement outlined, “Both the patient and [her] companion were properly instructed regarding the procedures for accessing the examination room and warned about the removal of any and all metallic objects.”
The official statement from the hospital administration concluded, “The firearm was not mentioned by the companion, who entered the examination room with the object by his decision.”
Following the accident, lawyer Novaes was taken to the Sao Luiz Morumbi Hospital, where he was given medical support for weeks. However, on February 6, the lawyer succumbed to his crucial injuries and died.
After Novaes’ death, the Sao Paulo law community spokesperson for the Order of Attorneys of Brazil in Cotia stated, “It is with deep regret that OAB Cotia communicates to all fellow lawyers the unexpected loss of our dear friend and lawyer Dr. Leandro Mathias de Novaes.” The statement added, “We are sorry for the loss and we sympathize with his family in this moment of pain”, reported the New York Post.
Reportedly, the demised lawyer had frequently posted pro-gun content on his TikTok account. It currently has over 8,000 followers, reported the New York Post.
This was not the first time someone died in an MRI accident. In 2018, a 32-year-old Indian man succumbed to an MRI chamber as he was holding a metal oxygen tank in the room.
