There is hardly any field that has been left untouched by Artificial Intelligence (AI), which refers to the adoption of human knowledge in a machine so that it can think, analyse and work like us. The influence of this futuristic technology was first seen in the social media world, with people generating fascinating images and videos with the help of AI tools. With time, it has made a significant impact on several serious aspects of our lives as well. Now, a school in Kerala has opted for AI to revolutionise the education system and make learning fun and more engaging.

Situated in the coastal city of Thiruvananthapuram, the KTCT Higher Secondary School, an educational endeavour of Kaduvayil Thangal Charitable Trust, unveiled an AI teacher last month. The institution collaborated with Makerlabs Edutech Private Limited to develop the humanoid named “Iris”. It is also the first-ever AI Teacher Robot in Kerala.

As per the details provided by Makerlabs, Iris was designed as part of the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL), a NITI Aayog project that was introduced in 2021 to promote students’ extracurricular activities across schools.

After it was launched in the KTCT Higher Secondary School, the tech company shared a video on Instagram with details of the AI teacher– Iris. It is able to interact in three different languages and can answer many difficult questions on various subjects. The other features of Iris include personalised voice assistance, manipulation capabilities and interactive learning. It is also equipped with wheels enabling mobility.

“At the forefront of innovation, Makerlabs Edutech is proud to unveil our latest creation, IRIS – the AI Teacher Robot, poised to redefine the learning landscape as we know it. IRIS embodies our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, inspiring confidence in more groundbreaking innovations to come,” the caption of the post read.

According to Makerlabls, Iris is an amalgamation of “Robotics and Generative AI” and serves as “a versatile teaching tool featuring interactive capabilities” like human teachers. The robot has a dedicated Intel processor and a coprocessor which will take care of the tasks. Users can effortlessly operate and engage with the AI teacher for a customised learning experience through its Android App interface.
