Sometimes a song on social media goes viral and quickly becomes the talk of the town. Everyone can be seen humming, whether they are on a bus, a train, a road, or a crossroads. But have you ever heard that a song can scare the government of a neighbouring country? In the same instance, a North Korean song was banned by the South Korean media regulator, describing it as a “propaganda piece intended to conduct psychological warfare.” According to the BBC, a song titled Friendly Father was released in North Korea in April, praising North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He was described as a ‘great leader’ and a ‘friendly parent’. Many of his qualities have been described in the song. As soon as this pop song was released, it went viral on social media platforms and people were seen listening to it everywhere. The lyrics of the song were, “Let’s sing about Kim Jong Un, Our great leader, Let’s boast about Kim Jong Un, Our friendly father”.
The video and memes of the song went viral on many social media sites, including TikTok. Seeing the increasing popularity of this song among the people, the South Korean government became alert. The National Intelligence Service has labelled the song a threat to national security and asked the government to immediately ban it. It is also said that the song was made with the intention of waging psychological war and spreading propaganda. After this, the media regulator issued an order to ban the song.
Seoul’s Korea Communication Standard Commission has issued an order to ban 29 versions of the song. “The video is typical content linked to psychological warfare against South Korea, as it was posted on a channel operated to connect with the outside world and mainly focused on unilaterally idolising and glorifying Kim,” the commission said in a statement.
According to the law, if someone violates this decision, it could result in up to seven years of jail. While a channel has posted this song, action will be taken against them as well. Let us tell you that ever since Kim Jong Un took charge of North Korea, tension with South Korea has increased. Many times, threats of war have been issued by both sides.
