This 'Watermelon Mayonnaise' Combo Is A Nightmare For Foodies

For most people watermelon and mayonnaise do not belong together, but Calvin Lee, a Singapore-based food vlogger, thinks otherwise. In one of his recent videos, he recommended eating a juicy watermelon with a dollop of mayonnaise. In the clip, he bites into a piece of watermelon after covering it with mayonnaise.

He explains the bizarre combination as, “The slight sour and salty taste of mayonnaise blends in pretty well with the watermelon sweetness.” This video immediately triggered a barrage of comments that reprimanded Lee for making such an odd food combination. One of the most popular comments on this video says, “Send this man to North Korea already.”

Lee uses British singer Harry Style’s song Watermelon Sugar in this clip. Referring to this music selection, an Instagram user wrote, “As a harry fan this is the biggest disrespect Harry’s music has gotten in the existence of harry edward styles.” Describing the feeling of disgust evoked by the video, a person exclaimed, “Yuck I’m gonna throw up!”

However, amongst the majority of comments that criticised Lee, many people indirectly supported him by suggesting that sometimes such odd food combinations end up tasting good. Making this point, an Instagram user wrote, “Apple and mayo also tastes good.” Another person wrote, “I don’t know if you’ve tried it or not but i’ve tried curry puff with mayo and egg tart with fried rice, to me it’s nice…my friend just looked in disbelief.”

This is not the only food video showing an unusual way of eating a watermelon that has gone viral. In June 2023, a video went viral on X that showed a person covering a full watermelon with batter and then deep frying it. The person then takes out the watermelon and cuts it into bite-size pieces before eating it, along with the rind. The batter put on the watermelon peels out but the interior of the fruit appears normal.

Similarly, in August 2022, a video that shows a man preparing a ‘watermelon pizza’ went viral on Instagram.

The video shows a man cutting a watermelon into a circular shape and then grilling it on the pan. He then puts barbecue sauce, cheese, and pepperoni over the fruit and bakes it in an oven till the cheese and pepperoni melt into the watermelon. He then cuts the ‘watermelon pizza’ and relishes it.
