US Company Encourages Employees To Bond After 3 PM, But There's A Twist
3-3-3 program comes with a unique twist; employees are required to share a photo of their hangout session on the dedicated Slack channel.

Verkada, a California based cloud based security firm, has introduced a unique office perk known as the 3 3 3, through which, the company encourages team bonding beyond office hours. The organisation allows their three employees to gather for food and drinks after 3 pm, all covered by the company. Each worker is allowed to spend up to $30 (approximately Rs 2,500) during these outings. The company has encouraged employees to use this benefit once or twice a week. Launched in April, they have seen full employee participation in the program, as all 1,800 employees have taken advantage of it at least once. Verkada’s CEO, Filip Kaliszan, highlighted the importance of such interactions for startups aiming to remain competitive in an industry dominated by tech giants worth billions.

Interestingly, the 3 3 3 program comes with a unique twist; employees are required to share a photo of their hangout session on the dedicated Slack channel. The CEO in a podcast, The Logan Bartlett Show shared, “When we built our offices, all 16 of our offices around the world, we try to locate them in sort of downtown areas or the cool parts of town. We’re very careful about that, making sure that we hit the right audience but then we wanted to make it easy for employees to hang out. Chances are you’ll talk about something that’s relevant or work related or you’ll share ideas and ultimately that’s going to benefit us and you know that’s been hugely successful.”

“I think putting a name in a program and advertising it and then literally posters in the elevator and around the office actually what mattered wasn’t about the money it wasn’t about the budgeting it was about everyone knowing that this is something they can do and then everyone getting excited about it. Again, it’s one of those in my mind, hundreds of tactics like, how do you get the team to be cohesive and how do you get the team to get along.”

Established in 2016, the California based company, originally focused on selling security cameras, they have now evolved to offer six products in 15 locations globally. Showing significant growth, the company reported a 60 percent expansion in 2023 and has plans to establish offices in other key cities such as New York and Tokyo. In June 2020, the company made it compulsory for employees to work five days in office and discouraged remote hiring or working.

While many companies are gradually reintroducing office work, the challenge remains in building connections among employees. To address this, Verkada’s CEO, Filip Kaliszan along with CEO Kameron Rezai has introduced the 3 3 3 rule, aiming to encourage workforce interaction and engagement.
