Social media houses many heartwarming videos that resonate with people globally. One such video showing a giraffe trying to drink water from a river is going viral on the internet. The video starts with the giraffe trying to maintain the balance of its body structure, while trying to spread its front legs and bend its neck to the river to drink water. It then pauses and introspects the area around him to look for any potential predators trying to hunt him down. After the giraffe perceives the area as safe, it bends down again by carefully balancing its large body structure and then drinks water peacefully. The video ends with the animal continuing to consume the water. This 27-second video was uploaded on July 7, 2019, and its caption reads, “To drink or not to drink, that is the question. The Giraffe and its reflection. Beautiful animal that could be extinct within 10 years.”

A similar video went viral on Twitter in 2023 in which a baby giraffe at the Oakland Zoo in California was shown learning to drink water. Named Baby Kendi, the giraffe struggled a lot to position her legs correctly for her mouth to reach the water; but in the end, she gave up altogether. “We’ve all got to start somewhere!” the Oakland Zoo wrote alongside the video posted on Twitter. “While she wasn’t successful this time, she’s a quick learner.”

The zoo said Kendi means loved one in the Swahili language, paying homage to the language spoken in Kenya, where one can find reticulated giraffes in the wild. Both Kendi and her mother Kijiji were reported to be doing well. The Oakland Zoo also offers a webcam for fans to watch the giraffes in their habitat.
