There are countries or Islands that boast of their rich cultural heritage, wildlife and nature. This Island in South Korea is famous for something unimaginable; it has to do with their safety. The citizens of this island cannot even afford to sleep peacefully. As per reports, it is the island of Yeonpyeong in South Korea, where people are unable to live a life of normalcy. The island is located a mere 3 kilometres from the borders of North Korea. The reason behind the claim is that they live in continuous fear of being attacked by the enemy country. More reports state that it started when Pyongyang carried out an attack on the quiet island back in January, successfully threatening their safety. 200 artillery shells were pelted in its waters, which sent the unarmed civilians scrambling to find some safe space in the bomb shelters, which are scattered all over the island.

A resident named Jung Eun Jin said in an interview that she is unable to forget the attack. She revealed, “At night, even a small noise makes me anxious.” She continued saying that she cannot sleep with the lights off and even keeps the television running, as she is worried that anything can happen here. Eun Jin further revealed, “My family isn’t here. I’m alone.”

According to the information given, the North Korean islands are very easy to spot from the shoreline while on a clear day the mainland is visible. So, the residents of the Yeonpyeong island are simply unable to shake off the feeling of threat.

Reports state that the South Korean government built eight state bunkers, following an attack in 2010. The attack reportedly took the life of two civilians and two military officers. The bunkers are fully stocked with a week’s worth of food, medical equipment, gas masks, bedding showers and a screen, which shows images from outside.
