Beijing: In China, it’s time for family reunions, fireworks and feasts as the country gets ready to bid farewell to the Year of the Monkey and usher in the Year of the Rooster.
Millions would return to their hometowns to ring in in the New Year with their families, and this year the authorities expect up to three billion trips to take place during the famous 40-day-long Spring Festival, between January 13 and February 21.
Chinese lunar calendar years are grouped into a 12-year cycle, with each year assigned an animal symbol: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. As per the Zodiac calendar, 2017 is the Year of the Rooster.
Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the first day, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month. The first day of the New Year falls on the new moon.
