Clashes broke out between police and protesters on Tuesday outside the Israeli embassy in Mexico, rallying against the country’s military campaign in the southern Gazan city of Rafah.
Some protesters covered their faces and threw stones at riot police who blocked their path to the diplomatic complex in the city’s Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood.

‘Urgent action for Rafah’
Around 200 people joined the “Urgent action for Rafah” demonstration, about 30 of whom started to break down barriers preventing them from reaching the Israeli mission. Police officers deployed tear gas and threw back the stones hurled at them by protesters, AFP reported.

45 Killed
The demonstration was called in response to an Israeli strike that ignited an inferno in a displacement camp outside Rafah, killing 45 people according to Palestinian officials. Israel said that “something unfortunately went tragically wrong” in Sunday’s airstrike while its military denied shelling the tent camp on Tuesday.
Israel says it is carrying out limited operations in eastern Rafah along the Gaza-Egypt border, as its Western allies have warned against a full-fledged offensive in the city. Israeli shelling and airstrikes killed at least 37 people overnight on Tuesday, according to multiple agencies.

The United States said it was monitoring the probe into a deadly Israeli airstrike it called tragic but added that the recent deaths in Rafah didn’t qualify as a major ground operation, crossing any of its red lines.
