‘Our Mission In US Has Strengthened Outreach’: MEA On Recent Deaths Of Indian Students
India intensifies efforts to support Indian students in the US amidst rising concerns over student deaths. MEA seeks justice for unfortunate incidents

India has stepped up its outreach to students in the United States, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday in response to the increasing deaths of Indian students in a series of unfortunate incidents in the first three months of this year.

Addressing a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted the recent death of Indian students, saying the embassy and consulates have reached out and have extended all possible help. “Since January there are some ten-odd students who have passed away,” Jaiswal said during a press conference.

Jaiswal said that a probe is underway in the cases linked to the law and order issue. “Such cases have been appropriately taken up with the US authorities to seek justice,” he added. “Our consulates and mission in the US, they have strengthened our student outreach that they convey to the students how they can take care of themselves and what should be done,” he said in response to a question on safety of Indian students.

This comes as 10 Indian students have died in 2024 alone including, 25-year-old Mohammed Abdul Arfath, who was found dead in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday. Indian diaspora body in the US has asked both government and private entities to work towards addressing the alarming rise in the deaths of Indian-origin students in the country. This request comes in the wake of a series of unfortunate incidents involving Indian students in the country that have garnered attention lately.

The causes of increasing incidents involving Indian students range from suspicious shootings/kidnapping, environmental deaths due to lack of safety knowledge (monoxide poisoning, hypothermia), mental issues suicides, and violent crimes, according to an analysis done by the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS).
